The Strathaird Area

There are many fine walks in the Strathaird peninsula, including one of the three main access routes into the Cuillins, namely the track from Kilmarie to Camasunary Bay. The main track ascending Blaven (Bla Bheinn) starts from beside a car park near the head of Loch Slapin, and there is a fine river gorge there with trees for those who don't want to make the ascent of Blaven.

Kilmarie itself has delightful woodland paths and an easy lovely coastal walk through Drinan to Glasnakille with fine views across to Sleat and the mainland hills behind. There is also a path out to Dun Ringill, an iron age coastal fort. Glasnakille has an impressive cave, known as the Spar Cave, but it can only be approached via some scrambling over slippery rocks at low tide.

Torrin has a lovely beach and at the nearby Camas Malag there is a popular and fairly easy walk to Suisnish and Boreraig, with fine views across to Blaven, the Cuillins and the Isle of Rhum. The track climbs after Boreraig and then descends to Kilchrist and Broadford.

In Torrin itself there is also an interesting track to Strollamus, which can be developed into a circular walk with Luib, returning to the head of Loch Slapin. However the Luib - Torrin section requires fording a river which can only be acheived easily when the weather has been reasonably dry.

Near Pier House itself there is easy walking along grassy paths above cliffs with fine views of the Cuillins and the Small Isles.

There is also a path marked on the OS maps from Elgol to Loch Coruisk. However, this path is not for the faint-hearted and should only be attempted in dry, windless conditions by experienced, properly-equipped, sure-footed walkers with a head for heights, steady nerves, and a willingness to turn back!

There are boat trips from Elgol to Loch Coruisk available at the pier.
